Oklahoma Medical Board Sends PA Rules to Public Comment

The Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision’s PA Advisory Committee recently proposed rules to implement 2020 legislation that redefined physician oversight of PAs as “delegation” rather than “supervision.” The legislation and subsequent rulemaking has inspired the Oklahoma Academy of Physician Assistants to advocate once again for expanding PA scope to allow full Schedule II prescriptive authority.

In today’s environment of opioid and other narcotic abuse and addiction, the state of Oklahoma should not expand the prescription authority to those who have not received the level of education and training equivalent to that of a physician.

The proposed PA rules are currently in the public hearing process before being officially considered by the full Medical Licensure Board. OSMA will submit comments on behalf our members opposing PA authority to prescribe Schedule IIs outside a hospital or clinical setting under a physician’s delegating agreement.

The public written comment period runs from the date of publication through October 3, 2022 and written comments may be submitted to [email protected] or mailed to the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision, Attn: Barbara Smith, 101 NE 51st Street, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma  73105.
